United Nations appoints constitutional expert for Cyprus negotiations

The United Nations has appointed a constitutional scholar to review previous convergences reached during earlier negotiations regarding the Cyprus issue. Legal expert Christos Kliridis noted that this appointment mirrors the procedures followed during the drafting of the Annan Plan, suggesting that the move will likely lead to the production of a comprehensive settlement package proposed by the UN.

According to Kliridis, it is expected that a new plan will be tabled for discussion, potentially echoing the framework established during the Crans-Montana talks in July 2017. He expressed the view that the international community is moving toward a structure similar to the Annan Plan, specifically incorporating the four core principles of the Guterres Framework. The appointment serves to reconcile past progress and integrate it into a new proposal for a solution to the long-standing division of the island.
