University of Cyprus presents TETHYS project findings on offshore wind energy
The University of Cyprus announced progress in the European research project TETHYS, which focuses on developing floating offshore wind energy and green hydrogen production. On July 10, research team representatives met with the Energy Service of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry to present key findings, including the evaluation of four candidate sites within the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The project utilizes artificial intelligence and computational simulations to assess offshore wind potential and climate conditions. A core element of the research is the development of a 'digital twin'—a sophisticated digital model designed to test and evaluate the efficiency, cost, reliability, and durability of floating wind turbines and hydrogen production systems before physical deployment. This technology aims to align research outputs with the practical requirements of the island's energy transition.
Discussions during the meeting also covered the priorities of an ongoing techno-economic study, potential future research directions, and opportunities for internships and academic exchanges. The initiative is intended to provide the scientific tools necessary for Cyprus to transition toward a more sustainable energy future by leveraging offshore resources.
