Reform UK announces 'Operation Fortress' to intercept migrant boats

The UK opposition party Reform UK has announced a plan titled "Operation Fortress" to halt small boat arrivals in the English Channel should they win the next general election. Party leader Nigel Farage described the initiative as the largest military operation in the region since World War Two, promising that the flow of boats would cease within a fortnight of taking office.

Under the proposal, the Royal Navy would intercept migrant vessels in the Channel and return them to France or Belgium. Reform spokesman Zia Yusuf asserted that the operation would comply with human rights law, specifically Article 2 regarding the right to life. While international maritime law allows for rescues at sea, it typically forbids the transfer of migrants to another country without that country's consent. Yusuf acknowledged that returning migrants without French cooperation could lead to diplomatic friction, but maintained that France has a legal obligation to process them.

Critics, including the Labour Party, have dismissed the proposal as a distraction from ongoing controversies regarding the party’s financial donations and recent decline in opinion polls. While Reform claims the policy is endorsed by former military figures, some experts have questioned the legal and operational feasibility of executing such a plan without international cooperation.
