Rescue efforts for animals affected by wildfires in Greece

Rescue teams and volunteers have been working for three consecutive days in wildfire-affected regions of Attica and Boeotia, specifically near Vilia and Megara. As of August 2, 2026, at least 110 animals have been successfully recovered from hazardous zones. The operation involves the coordination of groups including the Inter-municipal Center for Stray Animals (DIKEPAZ), Dogs’ Voice, and ANIMA.

Rescuers are conducting systematic searches, checking abandoned settlements and homes for signs of life. Recent operations included saving a large dog left tied in a yard and discovering four malnourished kittens inside an outdoor wood oven. In addition to companion animals, responders have encountered domestic poultry left without water or food. All rescued animals are being transported to a dedicated facility established at the Vilia stadium under the National Companion Animal Protection Mechanism to receive medical aid and sustenance.

Efforts remain ongoing as crews continue to battle active fires while searching for trapped wildlife and livestock. The situation is described as critical, with teams maintaining a persistent presence in the affected areas to ensure the welfare of surviving animals.
