President Christodoulides presents new policy framework for adults with disabilities

On August 4, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides presented a new Policy Framework and Action Plan at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities after the age of 22. Developed by five ministries and relevant deputy ministries, the initiative addresses the transitional challenges faced by school graduates as they enter adult life within the community.

The framework provides three standardized paths for adults with disabilities: first, continued learning through new inclusion and vocational empowerment programs at the Post-Secondary Institutes of Vocational Education and Training (MIEEK) starting this September. Second, the option of productive employment in the open labor market, supported by new employment and social enterprise preparation programs. Third, creative occupation and care services at local day centers.

This policy represents the government's attempt to provide a structured transition for students exiting special education. President Christodoulides emphasized that the success of this initiative will be measured by its tangible impact on the quality of life for these individuals and their families. The implementation of these programs is set to begin in September 2026, aiming to foster active social and economic participation for all beneficiaries.
