PASYDY seeks meeting with President Christodoulides to overhaul public sector reforms

The Pancyprian Public Servants Trade Union (PASYDY) is scheduled to meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on August 4, 2026, to discuss critical issues concerning public administration. The leadership of the union intends to request a "reform of the reform," arguing that several measures implemented over the last three years have created distortions rather than efficiency in the state machine.

Central to the agenda is the reform of the interdepartmental promotion system, which the union claims favors rote memorization over leadership skills in examinations for positions at grade A13 and above. Beyond this, PASYDY is presenting five key demands: revising the content of entrance and promotion exams, establishing tenure for indefinite-term employees, converting fixed-term contracts into indefinite ones, upgrading public sector infrastructure, and accelerating digital transformation.

Union Secretary General Stratis Matthaiou emphasized that the public administration requires capable leaders rather than "champions of memorization." The meeting aims to secure the government's commitment to addressing these grievances, as the union contends the current institutional framework has failed to resolve existing bureaucratic issues and has instead introduced new obstacles in the career progression of civil servants.
