Denmark extends mandatory military service duration to eleven months

Denmark has officially increased the duration of its mandatory military service from four months to eleven months. The change, which took effect for approximately 1,600 new conscripts starting Monday, August 3, 2026, also integrates women into the service, a policy decision originally made in 2024. The government stated that this measure is necessary to bolster national defense capabilities, enhance military readiness, and address geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region, particularly concerning Greenland.

Colonel Michael Willumsen highlighted that the shift is a direct response to the regional security situation and the perceived threat posed by Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. While Denmark relies primarily on volunteers for its military, conscription is used to fill gaps when volunteer numbers are insufficient. Copenhagen views this rapid strengthening of its armed forces as a critical contribution to NATO’s collective security strategy, ensuring that the country is better prepared to react to potential threats.
