PyroGuard AI system enhances wildfire detection in Cyprus
The PyroGuard AI system has identified dozens of wildfires across Cyprus over the past two years, demonstrating the efficacy of artificial intelligence in rapid emergency response. According to William Steven Demetriou, the network utilizes nationwide cameras to detect smoke or flames. Once a potential threat is identified, the system alerts operators within 10 seconds. Staff then perform visual verification before notifying the relevant authorities to initiate firefighting efforts.
Beyond basic detection, the technology provides real-time predictive analysis, including fire spread projections, wind speed and direction, and fire type assessments based on smoke color. The system utilizes triangulation across its autonomous monitoring stations to provide precise coordinates. The network currently consists of 65 solar-powered stations, with a planned expansion to over 100 units by the end of 2026. This infrastructure operates independently, ensuring continuous monitoring even in remote areas. The implementation of this technology represents a significant shift toward automated, data-driven wildfire management in the region, aimed at minimizing environmental damage and improving response times during critical incidents.
