Dolphin mother carries deceased calf in Western Australia

A dolphin named Fraggle was observed in the Leschenault Estuary, Western Australia, carrying her deceased newborn calf for six days. The event was documented by the environmental organization Geographe Marine Research, which noted that the calf had died two weeks after its birth. During this period, other dolphins in the group remained nearby, illustrating the deep social bonds characteristic of the species.

Researchers highlighted that this is the fourth consecutive calf Fraggle has lost. Experts had previously expressed concern for the newborn's health after observing its rapid breathing rate, noting that survival for calves born during the winter season is particularly challenging.
