Candidacies announced for EDEK presidency in Cyprus

The race for the presidency of the EDEK party in Cyprus has officially begun, with three candidates currently in contention for the September 5, 2026, internal elections. Kyriakos Mavronikolas, a former Minister of Defense and former deputy party president, formally submitted his candidacy on August 4, 2026. He joins Marios Hannidis, a member of the Political Bureau, and Sofia Christodoulou Makri, the president of the party's youth wing, who announced her bid on August 2.

The election process is currently marked by internal friction, with reports indicating that the eligibility of Sofia Christodoulou Makri is being formally challenged. In response to potential disputes, the Credentials Committee of the Congress—appointed by the Central Committee on July 30, 2026—has announced that it is accepting formal objections from party members regarding candidate eligibility, in accordance with Article 34(4) of the party's statute.

This leadership contest follows a period of increasing internal instability within the party structure. As the candidates continue their campaigns, the party leadership is managing the validation process to ensure compliance with institutional regulations ahead of the scheduled vote.
