Four candidates emerge for EDEK party presidency
The Cypriot socialist party EDEK has entered a critical leadership transition period following the formal conclusion of the candidacy submission process on August 5, 2026. A total of four individuals have officially filed to contest the party presidency: Kyriakos Mavronikolas, Marios Hannides, Sofia Christodoulou-Makri, and Giorgos Kouttoukis. The internal elections are scheduled to take place on September 5, 2026.
The leadership race follows a period of internal volatility for the party, which has been seeking to address the fallout from recent parliamentary elections and calls for organizational reform. The candidates represent diverse backgrounds within the party, ranging from former ministers and senior officials to current youth leadership. Specifically, Christodoulou-Makri was the first to announce her bid via social media, followed by the formal submissions of Mavronikolas and Hannides, with Kouttoukis entering the race shortly before the deadline.
Currently, the EDEK Credentials Committee is reviewing all applications in accordance with Article 34 of the party statutes. Party members have been granted the right to submit formal objections regarding the candidates until August 7, 2026, as the organization moves to finalize the ballot for the upcoming election.
