Four candidates emerge for the leadership of EDEK following leadership transition

Following the resignation of Nikos Anastasiou on July 14, 2026, four candidates have officially filed nominations for the presidency of the EDEK party. The contenders are Kyriakos Mavronikolas, Marios Hannides, Sofia Christodoulou Makri, and Giorgos Kouttoukis. The submission deadline concluded on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, with the election scheduled for September 5, 2026.

The candidacy of 27-year-old Sofia Christodoulou Makri, who serves as the president of the party's youth wing, has triggered significant controversy. An objection was formally filed questioning her eligibility based on the five-year membership requirement mandated by Article 34 of the party statute. Supporters, including the EDEK Youth wing, argue that her involvement has been long-standing and documented through various organizational roles, with evidence suggesting she was a member as early as 2021. They warn that her exclusion would be undemocratic and damaging to the party's future.

The Credential Committee is currently reviewing the eligibility of all four candidates. The outcome of this vetting process will determine the final list of names on the ballot for the upcoming leadership election.
