Three candidates vie for EDEK party leadership in Cyprus

The political landscape within the Cypriot socialist party EDEK has intensified as the race for the party presidency formally opened ahead of the scheduled elections on September 5, 2026. As of August 4, three candidates have emerged to contest the leadership position: Kyriakos Mavronikolas, a former Minister of Defence; Marios Hannidis, a member of the Political Bureau; and Sofia Christodoulou-Makri, the current head of the EDEK Youth organization.

Sofia Christodoulou-Makri was the first to announce her candidacy via social media on August 2. Kyriakos Mavronikolas followed with an official filing on August 4, framing his candidacy as a bid to restore stability to the party without personal political ambition. Marios Hannidis, who previously considered a run in 2025, has also declared his intention to join the ballot. The process has been marked by internal friction, with some members questioning the eligibility of candidates based on party seniority requirements.

The party's Conference Credentials Committee, established on July 30, has confirmed that it will accept formal objections regarding the submitted candidacies in accordance with Article 34(4) of the party statute. Further submissions are expected to continue as the organization navigates this volatile leadership transition, with observers noting that potential last-minute changes to the candidate list remain possible.
