High demand for subsidized vacation programs in Cyprus

The Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance in Cyprus provides annual vacation subsidies to approximately 9,500 people, covering low-income pensioners and workers through the Central Holiday Fund. The program aims to offer affordable holiday opportunities while supporting tourism in mountainous regions and the village of Pyrgos Tyllirias.

For the 2026 season, officials reported that demand significantly exceeded available funding. Specifically, more than 7,500 applications were submitted for the low-income pensioner program. The application window was open for 23 days and closed early once the volume of requests surpassed the available budget. Ministry official Michalis Loizou confirmed that the government allocated €1.165 million for 2026, which allowed for the approval of 5,400 applications, benefiting 6,400 individuals in total. Applications failing to meet income criteria were rejected as part of the screening process.
