New project launched to protect endangered birds of prey in Cyprus

Six organizations and state bodies in Cyprus have announced a collaborative project titled "Raptors for LIFE" to protect three vulnerable bird species: the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata), and the Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus). The project, led by BirdLife Cyprus, will officially commence in October 2026 and is co-funded by the European Union's LIFE programme.

Partners involved in the initiative include the Game and Fauna Service, the Vulture Conservation Foundation, the State General Laboratory, the Cyprus Police, and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. The project aims to mitigate major threats that have increased mortality rates among these species, specifically the use of poisoned baits, electrocutions from energy infrastructure, illegal shooting, collisions, and drowning in open water tanks.

The Griffon Vulture is currently in a critical state, with its local population reduced to only 37 individuals. Addressing the significant risks posed by poisoned baits and electrical grids is a priority for the survival of these birds, particularly the Bonelli's Eagle, which is the only eagle species currently nesting on the island. The initiative focuses on long-term conservation strategies to ensure the recovery and survival of these populations.
