Lebanon and Israel hold seventh round of peace talks in Rome amid continued border clashes

Representatives from Lebanon and Israel convened in Rome on August 4, 2026, for the seventh round of direct negotiations aimed at implementing a framework agreement signed in June. The talks, mediated by the United States, focus on the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese military into designated pilot zones. While diplomatic discussions continue, violence persists on the ground. According to the UN, while over 821,000 displaced people have returned to their homes since hostilities eased in June, approximately 360,000 remain displaced. The current round of dialogue in Rome is scheduled to conclude on August 6, 2026, amid reports of over 4,300 deaths since the escalation began in March.
