High demand for Cyprus ministry holiday subsidies outpaces available funding

The Cypriot Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance faces a significant shortfall in its annual holiday subsidy schemes, as high demand continues to exceed allocated funding. While the programs are designed to assist approximately 9,500 beneficiaries, including low-income pensioners and workers, current fiscal limits restricted this year’s approval to 6,400 beneficiaries from a pool of over 7,500 applicants among pensioners alone.

For 2026, the government allocated €1.165 million to support affordable holidays in mountain resorts and the Pyrgos Tyllirias region. The subsidy provides €57.50 per person per night, covering accommodation and full board for up to three nights during June, July, and September. Ministry official Michalis Loizou reported that the application window remained open for 23 days before closing due to funds being exhausted. Applications were processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with those not meeting income criteria being rejected.

The initiative aims to provide financial relief to vulnerable groups while simultaneously boosting tourism in rural areas and mountain communities. With 18 hotels participating, the program serves as a critical support mechanism for low-income citizens, though the ministry acknowledges that available funding remains insufficient to meet the total volume of applications submitted.
