Large forest fire breaks out in southeastern Netherlands

A significant forest fire began on Monday afternoon, August 3, 2026, in a protected nature reserve near the village of Oostrum in the Limburg province, southeastern Netherlands, near the German border. As of Tuesday morning, the blaze remained out of control, having already consumed approximately 1,000 hectares of land. Changing wind directions have continuously hindered firefighting efforts, complicating the containment process.

Approximately 300 firefighters and rescue personnel are involved in the operation. Firefighting helicopters were deployed at daybreak to assist ground crews. As a precautionary measure, local authorities evacuated a nearby campsite and suspended train traffic passing through the affected area. While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, officials noted that prolonged drought conditions resulting from an unprecedented recent heatwave have significantly increased the risk of wildfires in the region.
