Nicosia District Self-Government Organization and Mekorot sign water management agreement

On August 4, 2026, the Nicosia District Self-Government Organization (EOA) and the Israeli national water company Mekorot Development & Enterprise signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Nicosia. The ceremony was attended by EOA President Konstantinos Yiorkatzis, Mekorot CEO Barak Graber, and the Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus, Oren Anolik.

The primary objective of this partnership is to foster the exchange of expertise and best practices regarding the sustainable and innovative management of water resources. EOA President Yiorkatzis highlighted that reducing non-revenue water—which currently stands at 19-20% in the Nicosia district—is a key target for the organization. He noted that Nicosia's current rate is the lowest among Cyprus's districts and better than the European Union average, but further improvements are required.

This agreement addresses shared challenges posed by water scarcity and climate change in both regions. EOA officials reaffirmed their commitment to investing in modern infrastructure, digital transformation, and innovation to ensure high-quality water services for residents. The partnership marks a strategic effort to leverage Mekorot’s international experience in environments with limited water resources to enhance local service efficiency.
