Heatwave in South Korea results in 16 deaths

Since May 15, sixteen people have died in South Korea due to heat-related illnesses as the country faces extreme temperatures. According to the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 2,025 people have fallen ill from the heat through Sunday. This figure marks a decrease compared to the same period in 2025, when 3,170 people were reported ill and 20 deaths occurred.

The national temperature record was broken three times in the past week, peaking at 42.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday in Yangsan, located in the southeast near the port of Busan. Authorities have issued a new severe heat alert for the capital, Seoul, where temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. The country remains under significant meteorological pressure as officials continue to monitor public health risks associated with the ongoing heatwave.
