Cyprus develops new digital platform to coordinate violence prevention

On July 31 and August 4, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, chaired two consecutive meetings to discuss the development of a new electronic platform designed to prevent and manage incidents of violence. The initiative, prompted by recent cases of attempted and committed femicide, seeks to facilitate seamless data exchange between governmental agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, social services, and the police.

The proposed system is designed to identify risk factors early, prevent the escalation of violence, and enable coordinated, immediate interventions to protect victims and individuals at risk. During the latest meeting, officials evaluated a preliminary proposal concerning the technical, legal, and operational aspects of the platform. Key focus areas included security measures, procedural transparency, and full compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation, with input provided by the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection and the Commissioner for Gender Equality.

While the platform remains in the design phase, the government emphasizes that this initiative is a distinct project aimed at enhancing institutional synergy. Authorities continue to refine the structural framework to ensure that data sharing remains secure while effectively safeguarding vulnerable populations across the country.
