EU interior ministers to hold emergency meeting over Ceuta migration crisis

The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting of its 27 interior ministers for Tuesday, August 4, to address a major migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The meeting was prompted by the recent arrival of over 50,000 migrants, an event described by officials as sobering. According to reports from the Guardian and other sources, the mass crossing attempt resulted in the deaths of between 67 and 70 people, who died due to drowning or being crushed against a breakwater.

The upcoming session aims to resolve internal divisions within the bloc and establish a unified approach to border security. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is expected to advocate for greater European solidarity, expressing frustration over political criticism directed at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during the emergency. While the death toll remains a point of contention among different reports, Spanish authorities have confirmed that nearly all individuals who entered Ceuta have since returned to Morocco, with no evidence of onward movement into mainland Europe.

Ambassadors from EU member states met on Monday to discuss the situation, where they requested further verification of Spain’s account of the events. Moving forward, the ministerial meeting will focus on preventing similar occurrences and coordinating a collective response to future migration pressures at the EU's external borders.
