Customs department addresses safety concerns at Limassol port

Members of the Pan-Cyprian Transport Union (A) staged a spontaneous work stoppage at the Limassol port on August 4, 2026, protesting the relocation of the customs department’s mobile radiodiagnostic scanning unit used for container inspections.

The Customs Department stated that the relocation, managed by the port operator, was conducted with safety as a priority to protect operators, truck drivers, and passersby. Officials confirmed that the new location was established following measurements by equipment experts and manufacturer guidance, with the area appropriately fenced to restrict unauthorized access. According to the Customs Department, additional safety assessments were conducted by the Department of Labour Inspection on July 15, 2026, which revealed that radiation emissions remain significantly below safe limits. The union was invited to these assessments but did not attend.

This incident follows broader efforts by the Customs Department to move the scanner away from main transit routes to optimize operations. While the department maintains the site is secure, it continues to address concerns from workers regarding potential radiation exposure, emphasizing that all current safety protocols meet regulatory standards.
