Conservation work progresses on Nicosia's Venetian Walls

On August 4, 2026, Deputy Culture Minister Lina Kassianidou inspected the ongoing conservation and restoration efforts at the Venetian Walls of Nicosia. Accompanied by the Curator of Antiquities, Chrysanthi Kounnou, the minister visited the project site located in the south-eastern part of the old town, specifically the stretch between the Caraffa and Podocataro bastions.

Two specialized teams from the Department of Antiquities are currently executing extensive stabilization and stonework repairs. The project utilizes traditional materials and methodologies to maintain the monument's historical integrity and authenticity. A central focus of the operation is the manual labor of skilled stonemasons, whose expertise is utilized to replace and restore deteriorated masonry, ensuring the long-term structural integrity of the site.

The Venetian Walls are among the most significant historical landmarks in the Cypriot capital, featuring 11 distinctive bastions that encircle the old city. These Renaissance-era fortifications remain one of the best-preserved examples of their kind, with current efforts aimed at preventing further degradation of the historic masonry through professional preservation techniques.
