Man arrested in Mystras for hiding father's body in a freezer

Authorities in Mystras, Greece, discovered the body of a 90-year-old man inside a professional freezer located in the basement of a disused hotel owned by his 55-year-old son. The arrest occurred on August 4, 2026, following a police investigation triggered by reports that the elderly man had not been seen for several years. While the son initially claimed his father was living in Athens, he later confessed to concealing the death for at least two and a half years to continue collecting both his father's and his deceased mother's pension payments.

Contradictions have emerged regarding the timeline of the death, as local residents claim they had not seen the 90-year-old for four to five years. During the police raid, officers also seized an air pistol. The 55-year-old faces charges of perjury, continuous fraud, and illegal weapons possession. Forensic experts are currently conducting an autopsy to determine the exact time and cause of death, while the defendant’s lawyer argues that the man suffered from severe psychological distress and a pathological emotional attachment to his parents.
