Man in Mystras convicted after keeping deceased father in freezer for years

A 55-year-old man from Mystras, Greece, has been sentenced to 11 months in prison with a three-year suspension following the discovery of his 90-year-old father's body inside a professional freezer. The body was found in the basement of a closed hotel owned by the son after authorities launched an investigation due to the elderly man's prolonged disappearance. While the accused initially claimed his father had died of natural causes approximately 2.5 years ago, some local residents reported that the man had not been seen for four to five years.

During his court appearance at the Sparti Misdemeanour Court, the man was convicted of making a false statement to police. He claimed that his actions were motivated by a desperate need to keep his father “intact” due to emotional attachment rather than solely for financial gain. However, authorities are continuing to investigate charges related to serial fraud, as the defendant allegedly collected his father’s pension following his death. A preliminary forensic report indicates death by natural causes, though further forensic examination is pending to finalize the exact timing of the demise and the total sum of the disputed pension payments.
