Three lions die at Tokyo zoo amid extreme heat wave

Three female lions have died at the Tama Zoological Park in western Tokyo, with zoo officials identifying heatstroke as the suspected cause. The deaths occurred between July 28 and August 3, affecting animals aged three, eleven, and fifteen. Since mid-July, ten of the zoo's sixteen lions have exhibited symptoms such as loss of appetite and lethargy, prompting the facility to close the lion enclosure to the public until further notice while the remaining animals remain under close veterinary observation.

This incident coincides with a severe heat wave in Japan, where temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius in some regions, a threshold frequently referred to as an "intolerably hot day." Last year was the hottest on record in the country, and the current extreme humidity has significantly impacted animal welfare. Zoo veterinarians have confirmed signs of dehydration in the affected lions, and medical monitoring continues for the rest of the pride as the zoo evaluates its safety protocols during this ongoing period of high heat.
