Cyprus Animal Party criticizes cabinet reshuffle over missing animal welfare office

The Animal Party of Cyprus has expressed strong disappointment following the recent cabinet reshuffle by President Nikos Christodoulides, citing a missed opportunity to establish an independent Commissioner for Animal Welfare and Protection. This marks the second time the party has voiced such concerns, noting that the government opted to assign animal welfare responsibilities to the Commissioner for the Environment rather than creating a dedicated, independent office.

In its official statement, the party emphasized that in 2023, it had publicly supported Nikos Christodoulides' presidential candidacy based on the specific institutional demand for a separate office dedicated exclusively to animal rights. The party claims that this proposal was rooted in extensive experience and expert recommendations, yet the government proceeded with the current structure without prior consultation.

Looking forward, the Animal Party announced it will assess the newly appointed Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare solely on the basis of their actions and tangible results. The party intends to continue its oversight role, pledging to actively promote its policy proposals and defend animal rights throughout the government's tenure.
