UN Secretary-General faces criticism over perceived double standards regarding Israel and Turkey

In contrast, during his subsequent visit to Cyprus, Guterres focused on general support for a sustainable settlement to the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that Cypriots themselves must lead the peace process. Observers, including Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, noted that Guterres did not explicitly mention Turkey or the ongoing occupation of Northern Cyprus. Danon argued that this represents a clear application of double standards, contrasting the Secretary-General’s swift condemnations of Israel with his vague calls for cooperation regarding the situation in Cyprus.

This criticism highlights ongoing tensions over how international conflicts and territorial disputes are addressed by the United Nations leadership.
