European Central Bank unveils designs for new euro banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially unveiled ten candidate designs for the future series of euro banknotes, inviting European citizens to participate in the selection process. The new proposals are divided into two primary thematic categories: European Culture and Rivers and Birds. The ECB aims to involve the public in the final decision-making phase before implementation.

Under the European Culture theme, the proposed designs feature notable figures: Maria Callas on the €5 note, Ludwig van Beethoven on the €10, Marie Curie on the €20, Miguel de Cervantes on the €50, Leonardo da Vinci on the €100, and Bertha von Suttner on the €200. Notably, the €500 banknote will be discontinued. The reverse side of the €5 note, if selected, will honor street performers in music, dance, and theater to reflect the cultural heritage of Europe.

This initiative marks a shift toward public participation in the design process of the common currency. By gathering feedback on these final candidates, the ECB intends to create a series that resonates with European identity. The process is currently ongoing, with the bank soliciting opinions from citizens to finalize the aesthetic direction of the future euro cash system.
