Argentina and Brazil downgrade diplomatic ties following insults by Javier Milei

This decision follows repeated verbal attacks by Argentine President Javier Milei, who publicly labeled his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a "thief" and a "corrupt" individual during interviews and political rallies. In one instance, Milei referenced Lula's past imprisonment to further insult the Brazilian leader.

The tension escalated throughout early August 2026. Initially, Brazil recalled its ambassador from Buenos Aires for consultations and expressed strong disapproval to the Argentine envoy. By August 5, 2026, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry took the unprecedented step of demanding the return of the Argentine ambassador from Brasilia, effectively lowering the status of diplomatic ties between the two South American neighbors.

These developments mark a severe rift between the two traditionally close partners and allies.
