Local government collapses in Pera Oreinis following corruption investigation
The community council of Pera Oreinis in the Nicosia district has reached a state of administrative paralysis following a series of corruption allegations. The crisis began on July 8, 2026, with the resignation of council member Valentinos Christodoulou, eventually leading to a mass resignation of the community leader and the majority of the council members. The community office remained closed for three consecutive weeks, halting public services.
On July 15, 2026, the Nicosia District Officer, Andreas Hatzipakkos, formally requested investigations by the Audit Office and the Police Chief regarding suspected financial irregularities and a deficit in the community treasury. Lakatamia Police Station has been tasked with investigating the matter, and all relevant administrative documents and meeting minutes have been seized as evidence. Currently, two council employees have been placed under suspension as part of ongoing disciplinary and criminal proceedings.
