Cyprus University of Technology team wins award at AIAI 2026 conference

A research team from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) received the Best Student Paper Award at the 22nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 2026). The event took place from July 16 to 19, 2026, in a hybrid format hosted at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) in Crete, Greece. The conference is held under the auspices of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

The award-winning paper, titled "Interactive Retrieval–Governed LLM Tutoring for Surgical Site Infection Prevention Education," was developed by a multidisciplinary team from CUT’s Department of Nursing and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics. The project was led by Dr. Theologia Tsitsi and doctoral student Konstantinos Vakanas. The initiative focuses on the creation of an innovative artificial intelligence tool designed to provide secure, scientifically backed training for nursing professionals regarding the prevention of surgical site infections.

This recognition highlights the ongoing efforts of the university to integrate advanced AI technologies into healthcare education. The project represents a collaborative effort to bridge the gap between technical computer science applications and clinical nursing practices to improve patient safety.
