Experts reflect on Cyprus conflict resolution initiatives since 1974

On August 5, 2026, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) initiated a review of historical efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, coinciding with current renewed attempts to establish negotiations for a functional and fair settlement. The review features insights from Andreas Mavroyiannis, a long-serving Greek Cypriot negotiator, and Yiannakis Omirou, a former President of the House of Representatives.

Mavroyiannis, who served as a negotiator from 2013 to 2022 and was part of the teams under Presidents Glafcos Clerides and Tassos Papadopoulos, defined the bicommunal federation as the maximum concession offered by the Greek Cypriot side. He cautioned that the strategy of a long-term struggle has failed to materialize its goals, instead leading to worsening conditions on the ground. The experts analyzed various historical milestones, including the Annan Plan and the Crans-Montana talks, to extract lessons for future negotiations and underscore the necessity of addressing the current political stalemate.
