UK court tries 22-year-old for ISIS recruitment attempt using AI

A 22-year-old Somali national, identified as Mohamed Mohamud, is currently on trial in the United Kingdom on charges of preparing acts of terrorism and attempting to join the Islamic State (ISIS). According to prosecution evidence presented at court, the defendant sought to travel to Somalia between October 1, 2024, and March 5, 2025, to integrate into the local wing of the terrorist organization.

Prosecutor Naomi Parsons alleged that the suspect became radicalized while residing in the UK, adopting jihadist ideology. The investigation revealed that Mohamud utilized an artificial intelligence chatbot to seek instructions on how to join the organization. Furthermore, the court heard that he engaged with a recruiter via TikTok and subsequently joined encrypted Telegram channels, where he received propaganda material and videos depicting extreme violence intended to encourage extremist activities.

The suspect remains in custody as legal proceedings against him continue. This case has drawn significant attention due to the alleged misuse of generative artificial intelligence for terrorist recruitment, sparking broader concerns about the role of technology in radicalization.
