John Galliano to be the subject of the 2027 Met Gala and Metropolitan Museum exhibition

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially announced that fashion designer John Galliano will be the focus of the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” as well as the 2027 Met Gala. Galliano is only the third living designer to receive a retrospective at the museum, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition spans Galliano’s career from his 1984 graduation collection to his tenures at Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Maison Margiela. The retrospective will be organized into three sections: “Bearings,” “Horizons,” and “Atlas of Transformation.” It will feature archival garments, sketches, and fabrics, concluding with his Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring/Summer 2024 work. The “Bearings” section is specifically designed to address the designer's complex history.

The announcement has triggered significant discourse within the global fashion community. While his artistic technicality is widely recognized, industry critics and professionals remain polarized regarding his legacy and controversial personal history, highlighting a continuing debate over his place in modern high fashion.
