Cyprus launches 31 million euro restructuring of social welfare services

The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare in Cyprus has initiated a major restructuring of its Social Welfare Services (SWS), supported by a budget of 31 million euros. The project is being implemented as part of the “THALIA 2021-2027” Cohesion Policy Program and receives co-funding from the European Union. The reform aims to modernize state social services by overhauling existing structures, operational procedures, and the intervention mechanisms used by staff.

The comprehensive plan focuses on strengthening child protection, improving support for vulnerable social groups, and enhancing the overall quality of citizen services. Currently, the SWS manages over 40 distinct social protection and support programs through a network consisting of one central office and five district offices. Officials have declared the reform essential to create a more efficient, human-centric system capable of addressing modern, increasing social demands and operational challenges.
