Cyprus hotel industry faces licensing crisis and tourism slowdown

The Cypriot hotel industry is facing a dual crisis involving regulatory licensing hurdles and a measurable decline in tourism bookings. Evripidis Loizidis, President of the Paphos Hoteliers Association, reported that only 141 out of 728 active hotels in Cyprus currently possess an operating license. He warned that institutional and procedural obstacles require immediate state intervention before January 1, 2027, when current temporary permits expire, potentially causing severe operational disruptions across the sector.

Simultaneously, the tourism industry is experiencing an occupancy slump. Akis Vavlitis, President of the Cyprus Tourism Enterprises Association (STEK), and Christos Angelidis, General Director of the Cyprus Hotel Association (PASYXE), confirmed that August occupancy rates are approximately 10% lower than the previous year, with September projections indicating a potential 15% decline. While booking trends are returning to normal following disruptions earlier in March, industry leaders attribute the ongoing weakness to lingering traveler anxiety regarding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly affecting units in the Famagusta district. Stakeholders are now calling for intensified promotional efforts to recover momentum for 2027.
