Rare World War II German torpedo boat discovered in the Ionian Sea

Researchers have discovered the wreckage of the LS 6, a rare German Leichte Schnellboot torpedo boat, at the bottom of the Ionian Sea near Preveza, Greece. The vessel, which has been missing for 83 years, is considered the only surviving example of its kind in the world. The wreckage was found at a depth of approximately 96 meters, marking a significant milestone for maritime history and underwater archaeology.

The discovery follows a thirteen-year investigative effort led by historical researcher Giorgos Karelas. The search was initiated after German Nazi archives indicated the vessel was lost in September 1943 while being towed from Corfu to Piraeus. Karelas collaborated with a team of divers to locate the target. Due to its unique aluminum construction designed for lightweight speed, the ship remained a high-interest target for historians, as it provides rare insight into German naval engineering from the period.
