Cyprus commemorates 30th anniversary of Isaac and Solomou murders

Motorcyclists from the Isaac-Solomou Memory Initiative have begun a series of commemorative events across Cyprus to mark the 30th anniversary of the murders of Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou. On Friday, August 7, 2026, motorcyclists initiated a ride in Nicosia, performing symbolic protest actions by briefly closing the Zodeia and Astromeritis crossings to distribute informational leaflets without obstructing public traffic. Police and the MMAD special unit are providing security for these events, which span from August 7 to August 9.

The central commemoration is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at 20:00 at the Isaac-Solomou monument in Paralimni, an event organized in cooperation with the Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality. President Nikos Christodoulides is expected to attend and deliver a speech. The events will continue on Sunday, August 9, with wreath-laying ceremonies at the Deryneia crossing and a memorial service at the Church of Agios Dimitrios in Paralimni, concluding with a trisagion at the Paralimni cemetery.

The commemorations highlight long-standing tensions regarding the divided island, honoring the two men who were killed in 1996. The initiative has coordinated mass gatherings of motorcyclists from all major cities, including Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta, and Paphos, to reflect on the legacy of the tragedy.
