EDEK party expresses dissatisfaction over cabinet reshuffle

The EDEK party issued a statement on August 5, 2026, expressing dissatisfaction regarding its exclusion from the newly announced cabinet reshuffle by President Nikos Christodoulides. Although the party claims it played a decisive role in drafting the President's election manifesto and implementing the government program, it officially acknowledged the President's constitutional right to appoint ministers.

Party spokesperson Giorgos Georgiou clarified that EDEK views the exclusion as inconsistent with its previous contributions to the administration. Despite the friction, the party confirmed it respects the President's decision, remains committed to submitting proposals for the benefit of society, and continues to maintain open lines of communication with the executive leadership.

EDEK extended well wishes to the newly appointed officials, specifically noting Ilias Myrianthous, who was named Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare. The party also thanked outgoing ministers, with special recognition for Maria Panagiotou's tenure in her ministry. EDEK indicated that its future relationship with the government will be subject to ongoing evaluation, particularly following the upcoming election of the party's new leadership.
