AKEL criticizes the Christodoulides administration over cabinet reshuffle and state board appointments

The opposition party AKEL has launched a series of sharp criticisms against the administration of President Nikos Christodoulides in early August 2026. Following a recent government reshuffle, the party argued that the core issue is not the personnel, but the government's policies, perceived irresponsibility, and alleged prioritisation of narrow political interests over public needs, such as the cost of living and the energy crisis.

Subsequently, on August 7, AKEL expanded its criticism to address the appointment of new boards for state-owned enterprises. The party alleged that these appointments effectively nullified the Advisory Council, a body originally touted to ensure meritocracy. Instead, AKEL claims the process has been used to justify political and partisan motives while leading to an almost total exclusion of left-wing representatives. Furthermore, the party raised concerns regarding ethics, citing reports of potential incompatibilities and conflicts of interest in specific appointments. AKEL contends that the current administration continues the practices of the former Anastasiades-DISY government, treating public positions as spoils of power and undermining democratic oversight.
