AKEL criticizes the Christodoulides government over cabinet reshuffle and state board appointments

The opposition party AKEL has launched a series of sharp criticisms against the government of President Nikos Christodoulides following a cabinet reshuffle on August 5, 2026, and subsequent appointments to the boards of semi-governmental organizations on August 7, 2026. AKEL argues that the government’s problems stem from its policies, irresponsibility, and prioritization of privileged interests over the general public, rather than the specific individuals involved. The party highlighted that citizens are primarily concerned with the rising cost of living and the energy crisis.

Regarding the new appointments to semi-governmental boards, AKEL has leveled serious allegations that several individuals were appointed without having submitted formal applications, effectively nullifying the role of the Advisory Council. The party claims this process served as a mere alibi for pre-determined appointments made by the government and its supporting parties, while alleging an almost total exclusion of the Left from these positions. AKEL has called on the President and the members of the Advisory Council to provide explanations, stating that if the allegations of appointments without applications are confirmed, the council members should resign to avoid political and institutional responsibility for the undermining of meritocracy.
