Persistent poverty levels and access to vacations in Cyprus

As of August 2026, data revealed that 27.6% of Cypriots over the age of 16 were unable to afford a one-week vacation away from home in 2025, a figure closely aligned with the European average of 27.5%. Despite reports of economic growth in the country, the poverty index has remained stagnant at 17% for several years.

Eleni Karaoli, President of the National Network Against Poverty, stated that vacations should be considered a fundamental necessity rather than a luxury. She attributed the persistence of poverty to the high cost of living, including energy prices that have surged in recent years, high housing costs, and the significant electricity expenses required for air conditioning. Although the inflation rate has slowed, consumer prices have not declined, exacerbating the financial burden on residents.

The findings highlight a disconnect between macroeconomic development and the actual living conditions of a significant portion of the population. Experts emphasize that these indicators must be analyzed in the context of long-term financial instability, as many residents continue to struggle to meet essential needs while the poverty rate remains immovable.
