New data reveals commuting habits and public transport reliance in Cyprus

Recent data from the international platform Numbeo, updated on June 4, 2026, reveals that the average Cypriot commuter spends approximately 50 minutes per day traveling to and from work or school. The survey, based on responses from 111 users, indicates that private vehicles remain the dominant mode of transport, accounting for roughly 67% of all trips.

The findings highlight a significant disparity in efficiency between transport modes. Car users travel an average of 15.66 kilometres in just under 23 minutes, while bus passengers face much longer commutes, averaging over 50 minutes. Bus travel includes approximately 13 minutes of waiting time and over 33 minutes of transit. Other modes of transport remain marginal, with walking accounting for nearly 19% of trips, cycling for about 3%, and motorcycles for less than 1%. Notably, the survey recorded no rail or tram usage, reflecting the lack of such infrastructure on the island.

Environmental concerns are also highlighted, with the study estimating that commuting contributes approximately 1,060kg of carbon dioxide emissions per passenger annually. The reliance on private transport underscores the ongoing challenges within Cyprus’s mobility infrastructure.
