EU warns Turkey over proposed Blue Homeland legislation

On August 5, 2026, the European Union issued a stern message to Turkey regarding a planned legislative bill concerning maritime jurisdiction, often referred to as the 'Blue Homeland' concept. The warning was delivered by Kaja Kallas, High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission, in response to a parliamentary inquiry submitted by Giannis Maniatis, head of the PASOK delegation and vice-president of the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament.

Kallas confirmed that the European Commission is closely monitoring media reports and public statements regarding the proposed bill intended for submission to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. She emphasized that the cessation of unilateral actions that violate international law and the sovereign rights of EU member states remains a fundamental prerequisite for fostering a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship between the European Union and Turkey. The Commission highlighted the necessity for Turkey to fulfill its legal obligations to maintain regional stability.

While the Commission continues to observe the situation, it has not yet outlined specific countermeasures should the Turkish government proceed with the legislation. The stance remains focused on urging diplomatic restraint and respect for the maritime rights of neighboring member states.
