Nicosia sees multiple fire incidents, including a suspicious blaze at a former landmark
On August 5, 2026, a series of fire incidents occurred across Nicosia, Cyprus. The most significant event involved a blaze at a former landmark building known as the Corner Pub, located opposite the presidential palace. The fire destroyed the building and caused the roof to collapse, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Authorities subsequently classified the incident as a malicious act, leading to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect based on witness testimony. The investigation by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) is ongoing.
In separate incidents on the same day, a fire in dry grass on Kyriakou Matsi Avenue damaged two parked vehicles, and a separate fire in an apartment, caused by a forgotten cooking pot, resulted in extensive property damage. Additionally, emergency services responded to wildfires in Agioi Trimithias and Agiou Ioanni Malountas, as well as a small fire at a pub in Ayia Napa. No injuries were reported in these events, and authorities have officially initiated investigations into the causes of each blaze to ensure public safety and accountability.
