Fire contained near Marathounta in Paphos district

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 5, 2026, a wildfire broke out in an area of dry grass and wild vegetation near the community of Marathounta in the Paphos district. The Fire Service, led by spokesman Andreas Kettis, launched an immediate response, deploying four fully-staffed fire engines to the scene. These efforts were significantly bolstered by personnel from the Department of Forests and various volunteer groups.

To contain the spreading flames, authorities mobilized four aerial firefighting assets. Two of these aircraft were already conducting routine patrols in the region, while the remaining two were scrambled from Paphos Airport to provide additional support. The combined ground and air operations were effective, with officials confirming that the blaze was brought under control and successfully managed perimetrically.

Approximately four hectares of land were destroyed by the fire. While the immediate threat has been neutralized, authorities are continuing with final extinguishing operations to prevent any potential reignition. Once the site is completely secured, a formal investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted by the Fire Service in collaboration with the police.
