Wildfire brought under control near Marathounta in Paphos district

On the afternoon of August 5, 2026, a wildfire broke out in dry grass and wild vegetation near the community of Marathounta in the Paphos district. Emergency services, led by the Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, responded with four staffed fire trucks and support from the Department of Forests and volunteer groups. The response included the activation of four aerial firefighting assets, two of which were already on patrol, while the other two were deployed from Paphos Airport.

By mid-afternoon, the fire was declared manageable, with crews focusing on final extinguishment and full containment of the perimeter. The fire burned a total area of approximately four hectares. The Department of Forests utilized a camera network at their Athalassa Operations Center to detect the blaze early and monitor its progress, which facilitated coordinated support for the ground crews. Once the fire is fully extinguished, the Fire Service and the Police will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of the ignition.
