Dutch tourist dies in drowning incident at Malia beach in Crete

A 40-year-old Dutch tourist died in a drowning incident off the coast of Malia, Crete, on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, 2026. The tragedy occurred while the woman was out on a rented small motorboat with a friend and three minor children. According to initial reports, the incident began when one of the women fell into the water; however, subsequent updates clarified that the victim entered the sea in a desperate attempt to rescue her friend, who had suffered sudden physical distress while swimming. While the friend survived the ordeal, the 40-year-old woman succumbed to exhaustion and died in the water.

Local rescuers and nearby commercial jet ski operators rushed to the scene following calls for help. Although the woman was pulled from the water by her friend, she was already unconscious, and paramedics from the National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) could only confirm her death upon arrival. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Port officials noted that the rental of motorboats with engines under 30 horsepower does not require a specialized license, which is a common practice for tourists in the area. The three minors present on the boat witnessed the entirety of the fatal event.
